Dillard is near the Georgia mountains and is located in a very pretty valley. The car show location was the Dillard House Restaurant and Conference Center. I’m a member of the local MG car club, called Peachtree MG, and members were asked to help with the many jobs that would make the car show successful. My volunteer job was to help with registration in the conference center. I tried to help as much with the process as I could, but – many people had pre-registered and before the show, Patti – the head of the registration area, had created white-envelope packets with the show materials and name-badge. Therefore, the job of the conference consisted of creating an on-site name-badge and car registration for those who had not pre-registered. In addition to the registration table, there was a table that had items for sale, such as shirts, glasses, magnets, etc. <Note: I bought both a MG magnet and 4 beer glasses – except I drink iced tea in my glasses.>

I helped with registration Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning. After the close of the table area on Thursday, I drove around the area and found Blackrock Mountain State Park for camping. (It was about 10 miles south of Dillard.) The road to the campground was very steep and curvey – but, only lasted for three miles. I was amazed to see a truck with a fifth-wheel camper drive into camp. On Thursday night, people in the MG show who wanted to see an outdoor movie could attend the Tiger, GA (about 10 miles away) drive-in. I drove the van and parked in the back row so that I wouldn’t be in the view of anyone wanting to see the screen. I had a hot dog that was pretty good – but the line at the concession stand was very long and slow. The movie was “Men in Black 3” and it was pretty good. There are NO window attached speakers these days – you were able to listen to the movie sound by tuning to an FM station that the drive-in broadcast on. The weather was beautiful and the bugs didn’t bother me too much. A wonderful night. I told the host of the campground that I would be returning late. She told me that I would have to enter a code on the gate. Fortunately, the gate wasn’t closed so I didn’t have to enter the code.

On Friday, an expert MG mechanic from the Chicago area helped owners with their gremlins on the show field in what was termed a ‘rolling tech session’. His name is John Twist and he owns University Motors. He has many YouTube.com videos of how to fix many arcane progblems with MG’s and British cars. I HAD to go see him in person, because I’ve really enjoyed learning about the car with his YouTube.com videos. I wish that I could have spent more time ‘learning’ more of what he shared with others. On Friday night, there was a MG show BBQ catered supper in the conference hall. It was a buffet and it would be more food that I wanted – so, I asked someone at the show about a nearby restaurant and they told me to turn right and go a mile into Dillard – and, there was a good BBQ place on the right. I found it without any trouble and they were right – the BBQ was excellent. On Saturday morning, cars lined up near the show field for their pictures at 8am. The show started at 9am and ended at 2pm. Registration opened at 8am and closed at 12noon. There was a ballot box for the ‘most popular’ car – and judges made decisions on each of the classes. The show results were to be announced at the banquet that night – but, I had some plans in Atlanta and returned home by 5pm. (It was about a two-hour drive from my house.)

<Note: My Dad was a car dealer (the nickname that he calls me is “Puddin”) and my older brother took over the dealership when he retired. Now, my brother is retired and many years ago, he traded in an MGB and drove it for about 15 years. After retiring, he wanted to restore a 1941 Willys Jeep and after I pestered him about the MG, i.e. Where is it? Have you driven it lately? Is it still working? – I was the only person interested in it. He knew that in Atlanta, I could find mechanics to help me keep it driving – SO – he *GAVE* it to me! My MGB is a 1971 Chrome Bumper – but is NOT a show car.The BEST picture of an MG is saved for the last.  Be sure to notice the really great tires!>
