I actually left Atlanta on Thursday, spent the night with my younger brother and his wife and drove to St. Simon’s Island on Friday morning. (The Atlanta-Tybee drive is approximately 4 hours. The Tybee-StSimons drive is approximately 2 hours.) The wedding was to be held at the King and Prince Resort on Saturday. I had reserved a 4-bedroom residence (on the resort property) for Friday and Saturday nights. My Dad, older brother, younger brother and wife, and I were to stay in the house. In addition to our stay, Joe and Jenn and I planned to host the wedding rehearsal dinner in the house. I was registered at the resort and received the house keys about 2pm. I opened the house and began unloading dishes and things that I had packed and thought would be needed for the rehearsal dinner. My son, Joe, came to the house and helped schleep the coolers of ‘stuff’ up the double tier of stairs to the front door. At 3pm, the resort dispatched 2 large round tables and 12 folding chairs to the houses. The workers moved the living room couches and prepared the room for guests. My younger brother and his wife and I went to Blackwater Grill for a large pot serving of low-country boil and to Southern Soul for BBQ ribs, meat, macaroni, baked beans, and collards. We returned to the house to cook completely the low-country boil and to warm-up all the other food. I also had some rolls to warm. My brothers wife cut up cheese for me and designed 3 platters of cheese and cracker. I cooked and warmed food and about 6pm, many of our guests had arrived after the rehearsal and we had a self-serve buffet. Well, I don’t remember too many details after serving the food. I spent a lot of time in the kitchen and collected dishes for the dishwasher when people finished eating. From the invitations and responses, I think that we had around 30 people.
Saturday morning – I had LOTS of help, and I really needed it – the dishes were washed and the house kitchen was restored. I packed the dishes that I bought and got ready for the wedding about 4pm (the ceremony was at 5pm). Dad and I drove the block to the entrance of the resort, because he can’t walk very far, and my shoes hurt my feet and I didn’t want to walk very far. Joe and Jenn had hoped for good weather and an outdoor ceremony. However, the weather was marginal and the indoor option was executed. In room on the second floor, the large bay window allowed a wonderful view of the ocean. Jenn was beautiful and Joe was both nervous and radiant. My younger son, Ray, was a groomsman and he towered over everyone in the wedding party. Dad and I walked down the aisle with Joe and sat on the front row. The judge at the front presided and they both wrote and spoke their vows. A guitar player in the back of the room added much to the occasion. The ceremony progressed rapidly and Dad and I were the last of the family to exit when it concluded.
Joe and I gathered our family to return to the room for pictures. We had several poses to take and then we went to the first floor for appetizers. After talking with others who came to the wedding, we went into the banquet hall and found our family table. Joe and Jenn were at the head of the room. We had a great meal, served by table groups going to a buffet and the usual wedding toasts and wedding-planner events proceeded. I had a great time, but after the last of the wedding-planner events, Dad said that he was tired and I told him that I would drive him back to the residence. We quickly returned to our rooms and I didn’t have any problem getting to sleep.
Sunday morning was ‘pack-em-up’ time. We were supposed to vacate the house by 11am, but we had a lot to pack and it took a little longer. When I went to the office to return the keys and request a little more time, Joe saw me and stopped me. He and Jenn were in the lobby saying good-bye to guests. I found out that they had booked Delta tickets to Thailand for their honeymoon and that they will be gone about a week and a half.
After packing, Dad and my older brother left to search for one of Dad’s old friends. My younger brother and his wife returned to their daughter at Tybee, and I returned the low-country boil pot to Blackwater Grill. I followed highway 17 north from the St. Simon’s area to Tybee.
Note: I didn’t take any wedding pictures as there was an official photographer and I left my camera in my luggage. The 4 pictures included were taken by my brother.
